You Complete Me…

With Valentine’s Day just behind us, how many times would you guess this phrase was uttered amid roses and chocolates?

In the packaging world, it has a different meaning.  With efforts to conserve in terms of materials and transportation costs, we are seeing some products being shipped with something missing – an element left for you, the consumer, to add.

Some products (think cleaning products, for example) contain a lot of water.  That water makes the product heavy to transport and ultimately there is a cost associated with that.  With the luxury of clean running water in most of our homes (noted, not accessible everywhere), some companies are asking consumers to add their own.

We see some products presented as concentrates – essentially it means the water has been removed.  Replenish® offers one of the most innovative product/package combinations for this.  The bottle is reusable and replaceable pods of concentrated cleaners are easily attached.  This saves on plastic through reuse and transportation costs by not shipping water.

Sometimes completing the product experience on our own is about adding convenience as well as costsavings.  A recent excursion to a natural food store led me to two protein shake products that come ready to “fill, shake, and go”.  Rather than presenting you with a product that might require refrigeration or become unstable, they have provided the powder and the bottle, and you simply add your own water or milk.  (Check out PR2Systems and AboutTime.)

My questions to you… Are you a fan of this or not?  How do you feel about taking an extra step to prepare a product for use or consumption?  Share your thoughts!

Dressed and Ready to Show

Let’s face it – packaging is not always pretty.  It has a job to do, information to convey, and sometimes the design in terms of aesthetics falls short. Several years back, Kleenex® took their tissue packaging from functional to fun.  They introduced designer colors, contemporary images, and even appealing shapes.  No longer were they “grandma’s [...]

In Search of…Found It!

I love to drink water.  I drink a lot of water, some tea, and the occasional soda, but water is clearly number one for me.  And it just recently dawned on me how long I have been searching for the perfect reusable water bottle, and how difficult that search has been. Finally, about a [...]

One Blue Dot

One blue dot – that is what I see on the top of my washing machine every time I start a load of laundry. You see, I’m lucky to have a great front-loading washer, and the newer packages of laundry detergent are designed to sit right on top.  I simply pull out the “drawer” to [...]
